One easy difference in how you post videos on Facebook makes such a big difference in the number of views you get how fast. It’s so easy. Just upload your video directly to Facebook vs uploading it just to YouTube and then embedding that into your Facebook post. Or instead of adding the link to your original posted video on an outside source to Facebook.
Why? The reason is as simple as the method, really. Facebook favors videos uploaded directly to their website. So their algorithm will show your video/post to more people faster. YouTube video creator Mark Green fervently explains Facebook’s reasoning further in his blog post,
Theft, Lies, and Facebook Video
Facebook says it’s now streaming more video than YouTube. To be able to make that claim, all they had to do was cheat, lie, and steal.
Facebook wants to be #1 in video uploads/views, so they favor showing videos to users on their website that comes from direct Facebook uploads.
Want some real numbers proof? Sonja Foust of Duke University crunched the numbers on this. These 2 tables show the difference clearly for 2 example videos:
Video 1
Video 2
* is for clicks to open the YouTube video.
** is for clicks to open the Facebook video (rather than autoplay)
So, if you want more post views on your video on Facebook, the data shows it is best to upload directly to Facebook. But as Green explains, if the video does not belong to you, you should just post the link/embed the YouTube video, so the owner of the video receives the appropriate credit/revenue.
