Google has officially become a subsidiary of Alphabet, its new holding company. After U.S. markets closed last Friday, Alphabet replaced Google as the publicly traded company, consisting of Google search, Adsense, Google Maps, YouTube, and other new ventures such as driverless cars. Alphabet chose a new tld for their website, abx.xyz, but they are still making similar domain name purchases. They just recently purchased the “full alphabet”, domain name that is, Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com. Yes, each type we type this, we usually copy/paste it.
It’s not clear what Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com is intended to be used for – it is still not loading in the browser, or even being redirected to the official Alphabet website, abc.xyz. A spokesman for the company joked with media, “We realized we missed a few letters in abc.xyz, so we’re just being thorough”. As NBC News reports, Whois shows that Google owns 18,095 other domains. They have picked up misspelled domain name variations, Googl.com and Gogle.com, to redirect misspellers to the search engine. Google also owns the domain GoogleSucks.com . That domain does not load either, in case you are wondering. Similary, Taylor Swift and Microsoft went on the defense earlier this year in March, purchasing .porn and .adult names to protect their brand.
The domain Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com was originally created in
1999 and was updated on Wednesday when Google took control of it, according to the Whois domain database . It is not known how much Google paid for the domain name, but you can guess it’s more than the $8 regular fee they paid for abc.xyz. The owner of alphabet.com, BMW, does not want to sell it.
